What are 5G NR Measurement Events?
In 5G NR, Measurement Events are specific triggers defined by 3GPP in TS 38.331 that a User Equipment (UE) uses to report its radio environment back to the network (gNB). When the UE is in RRC_CONNECTED state, the network configures it with reporting criteria—rules that dictate when the UE should send a Measurement Report.
These events are fundamental to Mobility Management. They allow the network to decide when to perform handovers, activate secondary cells (S-Cells), or switch between different Radio Access Technologies (RATs). Each event uses parameters like Threshold, Offset, Hysteresis, and Time-to-Trigger (TTT) to ensure reporting is accurate and avoid "ping-pong" effects.
5G NR Measurement Events Reference Table
| Event Type | Details & Condition | Technical Guide |
|---|---|---|
Event A1 | Serving becomes better than absolute threshold Used to stop frequency measurements or deactivate measurement gaps. | Analysis |
Event A2 | Serving becomes worse than absolute threshold Used to trigger inter-frequency or inter-RAT measurements when coverage is weak. | Analysis |
Event A3 | Neighbor becomes offset better than serving Primary event for Intra-frequency handover. Standard trigger for mobility. | Analysis |
Event A4 | Neighbor becomes better than absolute threshold Target for handovers to a cell on another frequency or SCell addition. | Coming Soon |
Event A5 | Serving < Th1 & Neighbor > Th2 Targeted for inter-frequency HO by ensuring serving is weak and target is strong. | Analysis |
Event A6 | Neighbor becomes offset better than SCell Used in CA for managing secondary cells relative to neighbor cells. | Coming Soon |
Event B1 | Inter-RAT neighbor becomes better than absolute threshold Triggers inter-RAT handovers (e.g., NR to LTE) based on absolute coverage. | Analysis |
Event B2 | Serving < Th1 & Inter-RAT Neighbor > Th2 Inter-RAT equivalent of A5. Ensuring serving weak while target RAT is strong. | Coming Soon |
