5G NR resource grid

The resource grid is the fundamental structure for mapping physical channels and signals in 5G NR. It consists of resource elements (RE) arranged in time (OFDM symbols) and frequency (subcarriers). A Physical Resource Block (PRB) contains 12 consecutive subcarriers in frequency and one slot in time.

Key parameters

  • Resource element (RE): One subcarrier × one OFDM symbol (smallest unit)
  • Resource block (RB): 12 subcarriers × 14 symbols (normal CP) = 168 REs
  • Subcarrier spacing: 15 × 2^μ kHz, where μ is the numerology (0-4)
  • Slot duration: 1 / (2^μ) ms for normal CP

Channel mappings

  • PDSCH: Physical Downlink Shared Channel - user data transmission
  • DM-RS: Demodulation Reference Signals - channel estimation for PDSCH
  • SS/PBCH: Synchronization Signal and Physical Broadcast Channel - cell acquisition
